They Disappeared Us: Chicago Police Black Site

Tuesday, February 24, 2015 By Jordan “The Slavic Libertarian” Marinovich

“It’s one thing to quell demonstration and protests, but it’s another thing to use antiquated Gestapo tactics that are more commonly found in parts of the underdeveloped world or in places like China or Russia.” Those were the words of Cook County commissioner Richard Boykin after hearing about the Homan “black site” detention center run by the Chicago Police Department.

He, a slew of other politicians and activist groups are calling for a federal investigation into the facility and its tactics. “I hadn’t heard of the sort of CIA or Gestapo tactics that were mentioned in the Guardian article until it was brought to my attention. And we are calling for the Department of Justice to open an investigation into these allegations,” Boykin continued, speaking to reporters outside the Homan facility.

Above, a police officer in a ski mask poses for a picture outside the Homan Facility in Chicago. He was conducting what could be considered intimidation tactics on reporters. According to The Guardian, “A man, in a jumpsuit and a ski mask, pulled out of the Homan Square parking lot in an SUV and made multiple circles before coming to a stop. “You can take a picture,” said the man, who then offered what he considered a joke: “We are all CIA, right?”

Rahm Emanuel, who failed to secure a majority and now faces a runoff election, is coming under increasing pressure to reveal details of the facility. However, according to The Guardian, “Emanuel’s office refused multiple requests for comment” and “referring a reporter to an unspecific denial from the Chicago police.”

As documented in our story below, the Homan facility has been an alleged “black site” where detainees are disappeared, kept off the books, denied attorney and family access. Also, allegations of mistreatment, abuse and even torture have been made; as detainees claim to be shackled and isolated for extended periods of time, beaten, interrogated and coerced into signing documents.

Snatched off the street, disappeared to a secret location, stripped of all rights, beaten and tortured, shackled in solitary for extended periods of time; sounds a lot like declassified documents on CIA torture dungeons. However, this isn’t happening in a far away land, against brown Muslims who are “suspected terrorists”. This happens in Chicago, Illinois, USA. One can no longer discount the fact that the US is a Police State.

For decades, the Chicago Police Department has operated Homan Square, a secretive facility where detainees are allegedly stripped of all rights and have no records of booking. Amongst other abuses, attorneys are denied access to clients, detainees are beaten and shackled for long periods of time and only reappear when relocated to central booking or randomly released back onto the street.

The practice has become so common place with defense attorneys in Chicago, local lawyer Julia Bartmes stated, “It’s sort of an open secret among attorneys that regularly make police station visits, this place – if you can’t find a client in the system, odds are they’re there.”

As victims of this systematic torture facility come forward, it seems that, in part, Homan Square is motivated by politics. According to The Guardian, 12 protesters from a NATO summit in 2012 were disappeared to the facility, shackled for 17 hours, intermittently interrogated and coerced into signing documents.

The United States has seen an incremental and systematic increase in overall police brutality since 9/11. From highly controversial police shootings to the federal militarization of police forces with equipment and decommissions army vehicles; this revelation is the latest blow to the justification of such force.

Measures have already begun to reform police policy but this is a blaring example of how much the American public has allowed in the name of safety and fighting terrorism.

Meanwhile the police in other areas are out of control, seemingly trying to instigate a war with citizens. What gives them the right to randomly shot to kill or snatch and grab? Its time to take the guns but not from the citizens. From the Police. They are the ones out of control and over stepping their authority.

You will notice the police are yelling drop the gun. This always seems to be the testimony to justify their unlawful actions.

Witnesses said the man punched and kicked officers as they tried to arrest him, before reaching for one of their firearms.

This appears to be backed up by the audio of the incident, with officers heard to say, “drop the gun” and “he has my gun” before the fatal shots are fired.
